About Brian

Illustrator Brian Swanson creates award-winning illustration for industrial to creative companies in La Jolla, California, Las Vegas Nevada and the Denver area of Colorado. His styles range from mechanical renderings, “Primitives” collection of mixed media paintings to naturalist style insect drawings called “Bug Speak.” He offers award winning woodcut style dingbat fonts for use by graphic designers, and forced perspective renderings of all types of architecture.

Trained as a technical, or mechanical illustrator in Southern California’s aerospace field, he has the understanding of complicated layered renderings and a strong mechanical inclination.

Creative: Brian has created a group of images called “BugSpeak”, which depicts deceased insects communicating in their own languages. Two images were 1st place winners in the Van Go contest and displayed on a moving van, seen around the Vegas valley. The Las Vegas Springs Preserve selected a suite of 7 of the BugSpeak images to be on permanent display in the Nature Exchange, an educational center for Children to learn about nature.

Brian’s latest collection of work is the aboriginal and Aztec inspired mixed media paintings on panels and canvas called “Primitives.”

illustrator brian swanson“My ‘Primitives’ series is created in the spirit of depicting creatures with a primitive artistic style. Hard organic lines with bold colors, and detailed dots to create skeletons. Some details of the creatures are made up while still following the correct anatomy of the animal. This is much like the way that the Australian Aboriginals and Aztec people depicted the deities or monsters in their world, and what really makes these pieces a joy to create. My day to day work is creating highly technical pieces of 21st century life. Maps, machinery, scientific renderings, etc…” —Brian

The ‘Primitives’ series is a passion, as it gets me away from current civilization and expresses my vision of what he would like the world and its creatures to be.

A pioneer in the Las Vegas 18B arts district, Brian was involved in the design of many of the printed pieces and outdoor signage that gave it and the Cultural Corridor its landscape.
