Brian Swanson Illustrator Bugspeak Las Vegas Springs Preserve artist puts a humorous and fun twist on classical scientific illustration in his series entitled BugSpeak. The Exhibit consists of seven original signed prints that feature his illustrations of native insects. Originally done as pen and ink drawings, these prints are enlarged and highlighted with color.

Tongue-in-cheek humor is apparent as scientific text is replaced with “bugspeak”.

Collaborator helped create new languages for each specimen based on its voice, behavior, and physiology. Bees buzz, crickets chirp, scorpions tap, and centipedes wiggle and squirm to create unique new alphabets.

A native of Southern California, Brian Swanson is trained as a technical illustrator in the aerospace field. He is the Principal of Cricket Studio (www.cricketstudio.com)

The Nature Exchange at the Las Vegas Springs Preserve is the perfect setting to showcase this artwork. BugSpeak evokes the fun, playful spirit that exists in the Nature Exchange for collecting, studying, and trading of treasures from Nature.

Located in the Desert Living Center at the Springs Preserve, the Nature Exchange is one of only six in North America. It provides a forum for ethical collectors to identify, research, and trade their natural treasures for points towards other items in the collection. Traders earn points not only for the object but also for the knowledge they have about the item. This points-for-knowledge philosophy will encourage visitors to keep a journal, write a report, take a photograph, draw a picture, or identify a seashell. The collection includes museum quality mineral, fossil, and meteorite specimens.
